I have a airport extreme wired to my modem/router behind the TV. I wanted to extend the wifi network so I connected an ethernet cable from the Airport extreme near the TV to another Airport extreme in the dead zone. I used the airport utility and I was able to set the second airport as an extender of the first one. However, the AirPort Extreme base station can "extend" other non-Apple wireless routers if the connection between them is wired. On the other hand, the AirPort Express base station can "join" an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network as a wireless bridge to share a USB printer.
